Waymo: Pit Stop to the Podium

Since the conclusion of the DARPA Grand Challenges, the drive, excitement, and opportunities to get involved with autonomous driving technology at the university level dwindled in North America until recently with the advent of the Indy Autonomous Challenge, Roborace, and similar events. However, getting started can be both technically and financially challenging. To overcome these obstacles, students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Pittsburgh, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), and the University of Waterloo (W) formed a team to compete.

Join Waymo for a virtual event with the leaders of the MIT-PITT-RW autonomous racing team for a conversation about the current state of autonomous driving technology at the university level and how you can get involved no matter if you’re a student or already well into your professional career journey.

MIT Driverless Tech Talk at Blueprint (HackMIT)

Blueprint 2022 is a weekend-long virtual learnathon and hackathon for high school students, open to all skill levels – from first-time hackers to veteran coders! Over the course of Blueprint, you’ll learn new coding skills in workshops led by MIT students, form a team, and develop a project from start to finish with the support of our mentors. After Blueprint, you’ll not only have completed your own project but also attained the tools to do so much more.

Join the MIT Driverless team for a tech talk as part of the event’s Learnathon!

End of Summer Showcase

Overview:

Our summer goal was to build and test concepts to strengthen our foundation for the development we will overtake from the fall till the race day. With this goal in mind, our team has been working on multiple items. Come to our summer showcase to hear us speak about our sub-projects and progress!

Architecture Team:

Architecture team has been digesting every rule and regulation of the race and converting each one into a requirement. Building on these requirements, the team proposed a detailed architecture design – for each subsystem (Perception, State-estimation, and planning and control). The team also offered multiple conceptual solutions and discussed the feasibility of concepts with the respective teams.

Perception Team:

Due to the demand for high-speed racing (around 150 mph), the team requires a high-performance perception system. The team developed a “faster lidar” system by fusing two sensors (Camera and 3-d lidar) by using camera images to extrapolate the 3D LiDAR point cloud. The fusion system has other advantages downstream of the pipeline, which will provide us a competitive edge. We are currently testing the system.

Planning and Control Team:

Planning and Control team’s main goal for this summer was to build a functional prototype to compete in a multi-agent competition. The team successfully achieved the goal by developing a robust system that plans an optimal racing path that avoids other racecars using crash avoidance algorithms based on upstream data and predicting competitor racecar moves by probabilistic agent models. The system includes a hybrid MPC that then provides the required steering commands and acceleration throttle to controls the racecar to be on the optimal path.

Agenda:

11:30 - 11:45: Introduction

11:45 - 12:30: Project presentations

12 :30 - 1:00: Breakout room Q&A

(POSTPONED) 2020 MIT Driverless Arrow Electronics (Autonomous) Hackathon

MIT Driverless is excited to share with you this invitation to our 2020 Autonomous Hackathon, sponsored by Arrow Electronics, a Fortune 500 company and key solution supplier in racing leagues such as Formula One, Formula E and the Indy Series. The competition will begin on Friday April 24 with a welcome from our sponsors, and the students will receive their welcome package including both hardware and any software/datasets to be prepared for a full day of challenges on Saturday the 25th. Starting on 9AM Saturday, teams will be asked to complete a series of challenges designing algorithms to race an mini autonomous vehicle through the indoor track with the goal to complete the track with the fastest time and the least error. Each team will have their chance to race their cars at the end and the teams will be ranked by their completion time, error rate and efficiency. The overall event will end at around 9PM Saturday with a networking mixer.

(ONLINE) Autonomy 2020 Conference: Vehicles, Manufacturing, and Platform Technologies

COVID-19 UPDATE (3/25/2020): As a result of COVID-19, the Autonomy conference will now be all online! Click here to learn more!

Understanding current state-of-the-art and anticipating major advances for autonomous systems, either in product development or on the manufacturing floor, is critical for many industries. This conference will offer a unique view into MIT research on tools and infrastructure for autonomous systems, as well as MIT’s vision of the future for this topic.

The conference has three major themes:
  * Autonomous vehicles (land, air, and sea)
  * Autonomous manufacturing
  * Platforms for autonomous systems – connectivity, infrastructure, and socio-economic implications of autonomy and policies

Join us to learn how to prepare for the increasing presence of autonomy and how to incorporate it to make your business more competitive, safer, adaptive, and more effective.

This conference will benefit both technologists who want to understand the details and inner workings, advantages, and limitations of autonomy, as well as executives who want to arm themselves to make better strategic decisions.

Featured speakers will include MIT Driverless and two of our amazing advisors, Sertac Karaman and Luca Carlone!
